Background

In 1979, after completing high school, I attended the Federal University of Espirito Santo (UFES) where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (January 1884). In 1985, I got a position at UFES as a teacher in the Mathematics Department, and now I am a assistant professor at the Computer Science Department at UFES. In 1987, I obtained a Master of Science (MSc) in Applied Mathematics from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) under Cristina Cunha. In 1994, I finished my Master of Science (MSc) in Engineering Mechanics at the University of Texas at Austin (UT) under Dr. Eric B. Becker advising. I finished my Ph.D. studies in Civil Engineering at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) where I was working in the Civil Engineering Department under Dr. Alvaro Coutinho and Dr. Graham F. Carey. At the University of Texas at Austin I also participated in a "Sandwich" Ph.D program for one and a half years working with Dr. Graham F. Carey. My research program deals with finite element simulations of fluid flow and transport processes in conjuction with control theory. The applications are related with environmental problems and Rayleigh-Benard-Marangoni problems in a microgravity environment.
